What you get with Windows Server 2022 Datacenter
This listing is a product key for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter, the edition Microsoft positions for highly virtualized datacenters. On the server you license, Datacenter permits Windows Server in any number of virtual machines, so a Hyper-V host can carry as many guests as its CPU, memory and storage allow. You receive the key and a link to Microsoft’s installation files by e-mail, together with installation steps; the invoice is attached as a PDF when the order completes. It’s a single payment for a perpetual license.

What Datacenter adds in Windows Server 2022
All Standard roles are here too: Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, file services, IIS and Remote Desktop Services. On top, Microsoft keeps these for Datacenter:
- Unlimited Windows Server VMs and unlimited Hyper-V isolated containers on the licensed host, where Standard stops at two.
- Storage Spaces Direct for hyperconverged clusters built from servers with local drives.
- Network Controller, which manages the software-defined networking of a Hyper-V fabric from one place.
- Host Guardian Hyper-V Support for shielded VMs, whose disks and state are protected from host administrators.
- Storage Replica with no partnership or volume-size cap.
Hotpatching and SMB over QUIC are not part of this edition in 2022: Microsoft offers them only in Datacenter: Azure Edition, which runs in Azure or on Azure Stack HCI.
Choosing between Datacenter and Standard
Both 2022 editions use per-core licensing: every physical core counts, with minimums of 8 per processor and 16 per server. Pick Datacenter when the host will run more than two Windows Server VMs or you need the storage and networking features above. A domain controller or file server with at most two guests is covered by Windows Server 2022 Standard. If you are building a new host, Windows Server 2025 Datacenter is the current release.
Installing and activating Windows Server 2022 Datacenter
- Use the Microsoft download link from the order e-mail to get the Windows Server 2022 ISO, then install one of the Datacenter options (Desktop Experience or Server Core).
- On the desktop, open Settings, select Update & Security and then Activation, click Change product key and paste in the key from the e-mail.
- Without a desktop, use slmgr /ipk plus the key and confirm with slmgr /ato in an administrator command prompt.
- To lift an existing 2022 Standard or evaluation installation to the full Datacenter edition, the command is DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:your-key /AcceptEula. Domain controllers can’t be converted from evaluation.

Questions about Windows Server 2022 Datacenter
Do the virtual machines need their own product keys?
Not if the host is activated with Datacenter. Automatic Virtual Machine Activation lets guests running Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016, 2019 or 2022 activate against the host with Microsoft’s public AVMA keys.
Are CALs or RDS CALs included?
Neither. Users or devices that access the server need Windows Server CALs, and Remote Desktop users need RDS CALs for 2022 or later, for example the Windows Server 2022 RDS 50 User CAL.
Can I upgrade a Windows Server 2019 Standard host to 2022 Datacenter?
Yes. An in-place upgrade from 2016 or 2019 may switch Standard to Datacenter at the same time; the reverse direction isn’t supported.
